The Matrix
Model
Without the confines of inpatient treatment, you have fewer methods to measure success in outpatient treatment. One measurement is lifestyle change. Another is urinalysis (UA). That’s why treatment with The Matrix Model includes weekly urine testing.

Its purpose is clinical, not judgmental. Rather than a sign of mistrust, the UA provides a key piece of clinical data in instances where relapse has occurred and the patient is unable to talk about it.

It prepares you for dealing with positive tests or falsified specimens. Unexpected positive test results are extremely significant. At times, patients can react with anger or denial. The therapist’s manual recommends responses to use—and to avoid.

It diagnoses drug problems that may require hospitalization. Repeated positive test results can indicate that outpatient treatment isn’t enough. Urine testing serves a valuable function if it documents out-of-control use and establishes the need for inpatient treatment.
