Understanding
and dealing with triggers and cravings is critically important in order to
understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the active addict/alcoholic,
and to begin the first steps in recovery.
Triggers cause cravings, and cravings lead to using or drinking. Common sense would suggest that being
around people, places, or situations that have resulted in past use, might
increase the chances of using/drinking again.
The additional influence that these triggers have upon the brain makes
the advice to avoid triggers more than just a good idea; there is no other
way to reliably avoid cravings and relapse.
