About Matrix Institute on Addictions
The Matrix Institute on Addictions was established in 1984 to  promote a greater understanding of addition disorders and to improve the quality and availability of addiction treatment services.
Our Mission is to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by alcohol and other drug use through treatment, education and training, and research, promoting a greater understanding of addiction disorders.
Treatments
The Matrix approach emphasizes the use of outpatient techniques. Treatments focus on:

- Twelve-step facilitation
- Family involvement

“The Matrix Model is noted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse as a scientifically based approach in “Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment, a Research-based Guide, 2nd edition,” (2009). It is also one of the approaches listed by NIDA as ‘effective drug abuse treatment approaches’ in its Behavioral Therapies Development Program.”

The Matrix Model has been recognized as one of the few evidence-based programs for substance abuse disorders and has been listed on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). This prestigious listing was based on the  cumulative data from evaluations of the Matrix Model over the past 25 years.
Matrix Institute is nationally and internationally recognized for its structured, outpatient treatments and research-supported elements. Matrix is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and is a proud member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).
Education and Training
Matrix Institute is a leader in conducting training on the Matrix Model and providing evidence-based substance abuse education. The Matrix Model has been published by Hazelden (the largest publisher of substance abuse treatment materials in the country); and by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In addition, an adaptation of the treatment manual was specially designed for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and is widely used throughout the U.S. The availability of the treatment manuals has increased the demand for training services around th e world.
Matrix staff provides training to a broad range of professional organizations and institutions. Trainings have been conducted for high schools, colleges, mental health professionals, medical facilities, substance abuse treatment programs, managed care organizations, law enforcement agencies, judges, churches and synagogues. Training topics and materials can be specially designed to meet the needs of any group. To date, substance abuse treatment providers in the majority of states have received training in the Matrix Model and over 300 agencies have been trained.
Internationally, the Matrix Model has been introduced in Canada, Mexico, Curacao, Brazil, Slovakia, Spain, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, South Africa, Thailand, and Japan. The treatment manual has also been translated into five languages (Spanish, Thai, Slovakian, Japanese and Arabic).
Research
Matrix Institute continues to lead the field in working with researchers finding new, effective treatments for substance abuse. Research at Matrix has helped in the development of new treatments that keep patients in treatment longer, and help them have greater success. Some of the research we have participated in has  resulted in new medications for alcohol dependence, (Campral and Revia) and opioid dependence (Suboxone or Buprenorphine).
Currently, we are working with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to find a medication to help people with methamphetamine dependence.
The Matrix Model has been developed, refined and evaluated through research over the past 25 years. As Federal, State and local governments increasingly require treatment providers to use treatments that research has shown to be effective; the use of the Matrix Model has spread across the country. Matrix Institute leadership is committed to expanding our research activities in the future and incorporating new and improved treatments into our existing programs.
