There is a substantial body of research literature indicating that some substance abusers respond very positively to brief, focused treatment episodes. While not recommended in lieu of longer-term treatment, this intervention is particularly useful for helping individuals and those around them determine the nature and extent of a possible problem and for motivating the individual to decide to change.
